CAPTAIN’S REPORT
This is the captains report for the 2020 season of the Ancient Mariners Cricket Club.
72 years this happy go lucky cricket club has been trundling along and we weren’t about to let a global pandemic stop us, although it looked for a while like it might. We took our instructions from our opposition, who in turn took directives from the ECB, who in turn were working on government medical advice and when the time came we were ready, game on.
Good friends Ockham hosted us for our first match under Covid safe conditions and as the season went on – there were some things that we became more used to but there was nothing normal about either changing in the car or arriving in whites, pack lunches rather than tea and hand sanitiser – “lube me up” would be the subtitle of the season.
Things got off to a successful start at Ockham – after a good all round bowling performance it was runs for Gumpel and Westwood that saw the Mariners to a 2 wicket victory – 100% win rate in late July!
At Elstead the next sunday it was another victory Robin making 92 out of a team total of 221 – we think he was only dropped 6 times. The hosts rallied late in their innings but fell short by 28 runs.
Vagabonds was a run fest that ended in a draw – with wickets hard to come by it was Freddie who top scored with 77.
The runs continued to flow at Chiddingfold – with Leo put down in the first over then going on to retire out on a 100. Cieran, skippering for Chidd then repeated the feat retiring on three figures in the hosts reply. It went down to the last over but Chidd crept over the line to win by 7 wickets.
The Mariners slid to another defeat at Ebernoe – despite making 164 from 30 overs (Freddie with 64) the home side set about the total in quick time – stalwarts Stemp and Wittington getting the winning runs with 5 overs to spare.
There is scant details for the game at Steep – we know Leo was back in the runs (and wickets) and the Mariners won by an unspecified margin!
Kirdford was a bit one sided as the Mariners cruised to a 165 run win – after batting first and making 242 – with 50’s for Mike and Will. Wickets for Dan Holmes and Wootters saw off Kirdford for just 77.
At Lynchmere the Mariners batted first George Tysoe scoring a 100 not out in only his second mariners match out of a team total of 237. The hosts falling short by 94 runs as they were all out for 143.
Back at Ockham the Mariners took on new opposition the Oriental club. After all the recent run fests this was a low scoring affair that went to the wire – the Mariners failing to get the last wicket they needed before the Oriental club got to their target of 106 to win.
Follies Farm batted first in the next game and made 228-6 – after a horror start to the innings the Mariners rallied and crept to 151 before being dismissed 77 runs shy of the hosts total.
On to Hambledon in september with what would prove to be the last game of an extended season – like much of the season it was another batsman’s game – both sides making 200 plus in a 30 over game. Robin Harris made 84 in no time – ably assisted by John Gumpel with a 50 – to see the Mariners comfortably home with 6 wickets and 3 overs to spare.
It was the weather that put pay to any more cricket – although more lockdowns were on their way and with the second and third waves of coronavirus we were perhaps lucky to get as much cricket in as we did – let alone see what a game a Toys Hill on the 10th October would have looked like!
Stats wise it was a good, if brief season, won 6, lost 4, drew 1 with 2 cancellations. Freddie walked the batting cup – averaging 90 although if George had got a couple of more games in it might have gone his way. Jake topped the bowling averages – 19 wickets at 10.36 to earn the bowling trophy back from Freddie. We can all share the Founders’ Cup this year – just for all the hand sanitising, keeping distance and making space – let hope for the old normal sometime in April 2021.
That concludes the Captains report for the AMCC 2020 season.
