MATCH REPORT
And so it came to pass under laden July skies, through a mist of hand sanitiser on the Hautboy Meadow of Ockham – The Ancient Mariners took to the field to play some cricket for the first time in 2020. After arriving late because there was an accident on the A3, obviously…
Winning the toss and electing to field the Mariners assembled at a safe distance and ran through the playing conditions – 12 mariners rotating a fielder at each hygiene break – every 6 overs – and rotating the bowlers too in 3 overs spells, now don’t stand so close and don’t lick the ball – simple right?
OK – hands up if you need sanitising.
Will and Freddie took the new ball to start the season off and Freddie picked up a wicket in his 3rd over before the first hygiene break. Jake replaced Freddie and also broke though removing the other opener and number 4 to leave the homeside 45 for 3. With a wicket a piece for Julian, Thomas Dent (on debut), Robin and Wootters the Mariners made steady progress stemming the flow of Ockham runs before Freddie and Will returned to take a wicket each and see the innings wrapped up – the home side making a formidable 148.
After a “packed lunch” tea (for those that remembered to bring a lunchbox!) John Gumpel and Julian Dent strode out to take on the Ockham bowlers. With Julian and then no. 3 Dan Holmes removed with just 10 on the board it was a familiar Mariners start to the innings. However, Will batting at 4 joined Gumps and together they shored up the innings putting on 60 for the 3rd wicket. From there a mini collapse saw AMCC lose the next four wickets for just 11 runs. JC batted with Gumpel to see thing back on track and the Mariners were on 122 when Gumps was bowled out for a doughty 47. With Rex and Wootters for support JC scored 29 not out to get the Mariners over the line – once they found the line. The winning runs coming at the second attempt after running 2 short on the penultimate ball!
A belated winning start to the season – but I’m sure all will agree it was just nice to be back out on the field.
